codes for tenures

Tenures, particularly Anglo-Saxon tenures, appear bewildering in their variety and in the various ways in which they are described.

The coding employed here divides them into nine groups:

L0 This code identifies
holdings whose jurisdiction lies in another manor or with another lord where these are the subject of separate entries

L1 This code identifies holdings tied to a manor before 1066 where these are the subject of separate entries. As such, they are evidence of ownership and title

L2 This code identifies Anglo-Saxon
tenures which were not free, that is tenures where the landholder was said to be unable to grant or sell, or which were held without freehold

L3 This code identifies Anglo-Saxon
tenures which were free, where the landholder was said to be able to grant or sell or to hold with jurisdiction

L4 This code identifies Anglo-Saxon tenures which were free, where the landholder was said to be a Freeman, to hold freely, to hold as a free man, or to hold without lordship

L5 This code identifies Anglo-Saxon tenures where the landowner held in
freehold

L6 This code identifies Anglo-Saxon tenures where the landowner held jointly

L7 This code identifies Anglo-Saxon tenures where the landowner was said to have held his land as a manor before the Conquest

L9 This code identifies land held in pledge or on a
lease
