almswoman

Latin, prebendaria.

Only one prebendaria is recorded in Domesday Book (CAM 32,32), a dependant of King Edward in Cambridgeshire. The only known ecclesiastical institution in the county for women was the nunnery of Chatteris. Perhaps this woman was an abbess or nun. The service for her holding would have been rendered in prayers.
