places index

The Places table indexes all places named in both Great and Little Domesday. It is sorted by place-name.

The names of the fields, and the information they contain, are:

County: the county in which the place was recorded

Hundred: the Hundred in which the place was located

Vill: the name of the Vill

Phillimore: the Phillimore entry reference

Area: an administrative unit between county and Hundred

Xrefs: cross references to alternative forms or identifications

WrongCounty: the county in which the place ought to have been recorded

WrongCountyCode: coding (Y/N) of the previous field

Riding1974: the 1974 Riding where this differs from that of 1086

Riding1974Code: coding (Y/N) of the previous field

Location: location of places which are difficult to identify.
